When you are a small business, marketing your services and products can seem like the last thing you have time to do. If you think about it simplistically, marketing is just a way to connect with the people you are meant to be working with. If you are passionate about what you are doing, you must share it with people who will be passionate about it as well.
What does a project manager know about marketing?
If you have read about me, you know that most of my professional experience is in project management. You might ask what on earth I could know about marketing as a project manager and the director of a PMO. The truth is, in those roles, not a lot. I learned just enough working on projects with some amazing marketing professionals to make me curious. My curiosity led me down a road of extracurricular learning. I’ve taken four college courses on digital marketing (and counting). Additionally, I keep up to date with the ongoing research and studies in the arena.
When I decide to tackle a new topic, I tend to take a three-prong approach to learning about it. The first step is to figure out who the experts in the field are and see what they have to say. The second step is to learn as much as possible as a layperson. Thank google, there is a lot out there about almost everything. I wish it could go without saying, but in both steps one and two, thorough vetting of the sources is imperative. I will head to formal training if I’m still itching for information. These days you can audit college courses online for free, and since the COVID-19 pandemic, many colleges offer classes online for credit.
